WJA – Drain and Sewer (DS or DSP)

Minimum 4-hour session (Subject to Class Size and Qualifying Criteria)

The WJA Drain and Sewer Water Jetting Module (DS or DSP) is a comprehensive training session designed for individuals operating drain and sewer jetting equipment and those managing and designing drain cleaning tasks. This minimum 4-hour course focuses on theoretical and practical assessments, providing a foundation to understand the hazards involved in drain and sewer cleaning. The module is taught against the WJA Drain and Sewer water jetting “Red Code” of Practice during the course, serving as a reference throughout the training.

This Module, which requires completion of the WJA Safety Awareness course to be in date, offers a balanced approach to learning, combining theory in a classroom environment with practical training using live water jetting equipment. Notably for DSP Module variant candidates, the training includes surface preparation using a jetting gun with protective shroud and hose whip checks for additional safety – with a maximum pressure of 275 bar (4,000 psi). It’s important to note that the training does NOT cover works involving confined space entry, requiring operatives to have passed a separate recognized confined space entry course.  Although the pressure WILL NOT exceed 275 bar (4,000 psi) and candidates must be able to comfortably control the jetting accessories, this includes managing reaction force through manual handling.

The WJA’s aim is to eliminate the use of wash-down nozzles and for operatives to have optimum control over the delivery of water using a jetting gun with a trigger mechanism. The course is tailored for new operational candidates, individuals refreshing their WJA card, managers, supervisors, site owners, permit issuers, and health and safety managers/officers. It aims to ensure compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and emphasizes the need for thorough knowledge and understanding of the hazards involved in water jetting to operate safely.

The training covers various topics, including the WJA Red Code of Practice, equipment checks, nozzle types and selection, health and safety protocols, and practical assessments on cleaning a drain/sewer and surface preparation.

Delegates completing the course will gain a deep understanding of drain and sewer cleaning hazards, health and safety protocols, equipment checks, and the necessary actions to prevent water jetting injuries.

The course is open to candidates looking to renew their cards or new candidates seeking to add the Drain and Sewer module to their card, with pre-course requirements including age (18 years or older) and proficiency in English.

  • Understand the hazards involved when cleaning Drains / Sewers
  • For DSP (in addition), cleaning a surface by utilising safe use of a jetting gun.
  • Understand health and safety and the hierarchy of control when applied to a water jetting task.
  • Have knowledge of the potential injury that can be caused by a water jet /pressurised system failure.
  • Understand daily checks and identify hazards on equipment prior to start up.
  • Understand what makes a competent team when cleaning drain / sewers and using a jetting gun.
  • Understand potential hazards within a water jetting task on cleaning drains and sewers. (DSP includes cleaning surfaces with a jetting gun).
  • Understanding how to prevent a water jetting injury and action taken as specified in the red code of practice.
  • Understand what we need to do to leave the area safe & secure.
